Healthy Schools

Posted  by Bruce Missig.

We are all worried about the test scores of our children at school and alot of the times we blame bad grades on the failure of the schools.  Have you ever considered that the toxic level of chemicals in your homes and at the schools might have alot to do with how some children test.  There are over 83,000 different chemicals in use that the epa has no long term testing on them to find out what the effects it has on us.

Improving School Environments Through Green Cleaning
As research mounts about the link between indoor air quality and health, and
as more children enter school with respiratory problems, schools, districts,
and even whole states are switching to more environmentally-friendly
cleaning agents.Included: Descriptions of green cleaning programs and how to
implement them.
All-natural.
Organic.
Environmentally-friendly.
Those words describe products most of us would like to purchase, but
sometimes we opt not to buy them because they can be difficult to find or expensive.

But just as organic and all-natural foods are becoming more mainstream,
other products -- such as cleaning supplies -- are becoming more
environmentally-friendly and more available.
And as the number of children diagnosed with asthma and chemical
sensitivities continues to increase and research mounts about the importance of indoor
air quality, some school leaders are seeking out a new generation of cleaning
supplies for their school buildings.
CLEANING GREEN BENEFITS KIDS, STAFF, LEARNING
Decreasing the use of chemical cleaners in schools can reduce the number of
health problems among teachers, students, and custodial staff; cut down on
absenteeism; and even improve student performance, according to green cleaning
advocates.

In September 2007, the Ohio School Facilities Commission (OSFC) adopted Resolution 07-124 OSFC homepage that requires all newly built or significantly renovated school buildings to aquire a LEED-Silver (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design) rating or better from the US Green Building Council (USGBC).  Many of the schools have opted to implement a green cleaning program voluntarily in response to this initiative.  Once built and operating for two years, the OSFC and the USGBC will strongly encourage all new buildings to also work toward certification for existing buildings.  One prerequisite for certification is the implementation of a green cleaning program.

As it stands, we have over 55 schools registered in the LEED certification process. During the next year, this number is expected to rise to 180 schools as we begin nearly $1B worth of building projects.  Our emphasis is significant operational savings through energy efficiency, daylight harvesting, rainwater harvesting, improved indoor environmental quality and the installation of renewable energy where appropriate.

It is only through community engagement and support that we at the OSFC will meet our goals.

Thank you for your concern and support.
